A more recent development at the Agricola Faena is that of the cultivation of walnuts. Some of the land on the farm presented cultivation difficulties for other crops, and consequently it was decided to use it for this purpose, with the aim of producing plants both for their wood and their resulting fruit. Since 1986 we have planted approx. 35 hectares of walnut trees and in this case we also used plants cultivated in the farm’s nursery. In the implantation created, besides the typically Italian Sorrento variety, we also used approximately twenty French and Californian varieties from among those considered most suitable for our soil and climate.
In total, the arable land represents about a quarter of the surface area of the farm. The crops cultivated, on which we operate an annual rotation system, include common wheat, durum wheat, barley, sunflowers, and for the last several years also a particular type of chickpea which is highly appreciated for its small size and ease of cooking.
